Market Access Is Now a Variable. Build Supply Chains That Assume It

At the start of May 2026, Mexico and Colombia suspended imports of US pork offal following an isolated pseudorabies incident. Colombia resolved the matter in early July, Mexico in mid July. In the intervening weeks, US pork variety meat exports fell 21% year over year, dragging June total pork exports down 6% in volume to 224,822 metric tons and 9% in value to $624.5 million.

Then the aggregate recovered. First half 2026 pork exports reached 1.51 million metric tons, up 4% year over year, with value up 3% to $4.22 billion. Shipments to Central America and the Dominican Republic are on record pace. Colombia is tracking toward a record year despite the interruption.

The industry has largely filed this as a good news story. We would file it differently.

The recovery is not the lesson. The trigger is.

One animal health incident closed two markets for roughly two months. Not a trade war. Not a tariff dispute. A single isolated case, and an entire category of product stopped moving into two of the most important destinations in the Americas.

National export totals recovered because exporters redirected volume. Individual buyers with a single origin program did not have that option. For them the interruption was not a dip in a chart. It was two months of unfilled orders.

This is a pattern, not an incident.

Look across proteins over the past 24 months and the shape repeats.

  • China suspended Chilean poultry in April 2026 after a bird flu outbreak, having only restored trade in late 2024 following an 18 month suspension.

  • The Philippines lifted poultry import bans on two US states in August 2026 as outbreaks were declared over.

  • US beef access to China has remained constrained by unrenewed plant registrations.

  • Exporters continue to face extended clearance times in China on heightened inspection.

Different proteins, different origins, different causes. Same structure. Access is granted and withdrawn by importing authorities on timelines no buyer controls, and the decision arrives without notice.

Sourcing diversification is usually sold as the wrong thing.

Multi origin sourcing is typically pitched as price arbitrage, a way to shop between suppliers and capture spreads. That is a real benefit, and it is the smaller one.

The larger benefit is continuity. The question a procurement team should be asking is not who is cheapest this quarter. It is simpler and harder: if this origin closes tomorrow morning, what does week two look like?

If the answer requires new supplier qualification, new documentation, and a fresh logistics setup, the program is exposed. Diversification only works if the alternative origins are already qualified, already contracted and already moving product.
