UK Advances a New Welfare Framework for Pig Production

The United Kingdom has outlined a new strategic direction for pig welfare, reinforcing its commitment to higher animal welfare standards across the livestock sector. The initiative forms part of a broader national framework that addresses the treatment of companion animals, wildlife, farm animals, and international welfare considerations.

For pig production, the strategy focuses on collaboration rather than immediate regulation. Authorities plan to work closely with farmers, veterinarians, and industry stakeholders to progressively improve welfare conditions throughout the production cycle. Key priorities include transitioning away from farrowing crates, improving slaughter practices by phasing out carbon dioxide stunning, and enhancing animal well-being during transport.

The approach emphasizes consultation and gradual implementation, allowing producers to adapt while maintaining operational viability. Support tools such as the Animal Health and Welfare Plan will remain central in guiding farms through these changes.

Overall, the strategy sets a clear long-term direction for the UK pork sector, where welfare standards are expected to play an increasingly important role in production practices, market access, and consumer trust.
